This is the chain of events leading to the announcement by Chancellor Alistair Darling of the loss of Child Benefit details relating to 25 million individuals:

March 2007: A junior official at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) provides the National Audit Office (NAO) with a full copy of HMRC's child benefit data, in breach of security procedures. The information is later safely returned.

September: Records of around 15,000 people's details are lost after being sent by HMRC to Standard Life. In the same month, an HMRC laptop containing around 400 ISA customers' details is stolen.

October 18: A junior official again sends child benefit data to the NAO via the courier TNT, which operates the HMRC's post system. The package, containing two CDs with details relating to 25 million individuals, is not recorded or registered and fails to arrive.

October: A second copy of the data is sent by HMRC to the NAO, again in breach of procedures. This time the package is sent by registered post and arrives safely.

November 8: Senior management at HMRC is informed that the October 18 package is missing.

November 10: Mr Darling is told about the missing data and immediately informs Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The Chancellor orders an immediate investigation, searches of all premises where the package might be found and action to prevent a repeat of the incident.

November 12: HMRC report that evidence has been found which might lead to the retrieval of the missing package.

November 14: Mr Darling instructs Revenue and Customs chairman Paul Gray to call in the Metropolitan Police, having decided that the HMRC searches have failed. Police searches of HMRC and NAO premises, along with interviews of staff, continue.

November 15: Mr Darling discusses the incident with Information Commissioner Richard Thomas, who agrees that remedial action must be taken before a public statement is made.

Week of November 12-18: Mr Gray informs Mr Darling "on his own initiative" that he feels he should resign.

Mr Darling seeks the advice of the Financial Services Authority and Serious Organised Crime Agency. Banks and other financial institutions are alerted by HMRC.

November 20: News that Mr Darling is to make a statement to the House of Commons on HMRC is followed by the announcement of Mr Gray's resignation.

LONDON (Reuters) - Ofwat plans to fine the new owners of Southern Water 20 million pounds after the water company deliberately misreported information more than two years ago.

"The magnitude of this fine reflects the magnitude of the offence -- deliberately misleading the regulator," said Ofwat Chief Executive Regina Finn.

"Southern Water's shareholders will bear the entire cost of this fine," she added. "It will not be passed on to its customers." (Sure they wont, should we belive a company that illegaly hyped up it's prices to play fair on this judgment!!!!!)

A group of infrastructure funds led by JPMorgan Chase & Co last month agreed to buy Southern Water from Royal Bank of Scotland for about 1.3 billion pounds.

JPMorgan partnered with Australia's Challenger Infrastructure Fund and other funds to buy the company, which provides water to more than 2 million people in southern England.

"The company benefited directly from this misreporting at the last two price reviews, meaning Southern was able to increase its prices by more than it should have done," said Finn. "Customers received higher than necessary bills because of the company's deception."

Southern Water admitted the offence and said customers who had been affected had been reimbursed.

Home Office minister Admiral Lord West has completed an inquiry into security at crowded locations across Britain. He is expected to ask sports grounds, shopping centres, cinemas, theatres and other “at risk” venues to improve security, including employing specially-trained door staff.

Of course anyone other than a politician will see the following flaws in this piece of pointless posturing:

A: Most security is contracted out to private firms, who pay the lowest wage they can legally get away with, (whilst charging the tax payer top dollar of course)

A father of two boys put safety pins through their tongues and lips and slit their mouths with scalpel blades, a court has heard.

The Nigerian-born man, who cannot be named to protect the identities of his children, would also put clothes pegs on their lips and tongues.

On one occasion he is alleged to have pressed a child's tongue with pliers until it bled and swelled, Bradford Crown Court was told.

He would stitch up the wounds with a medical kit and is said to have told the boys he inflicted the injuries because God had his tongue cut off in the Bible.

Caroline Wigin, prosecuting, said the boys' mother would watch, or turn a blind eye, as their father carried out the abuse at their home in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

The siblings' injuries were discovered in February 2005 when a friend of the older boy - now aged 13 but who was about nine at the time - spotted his bruises during a PE lesson.

Miss Wigin said the boy then admitted his father beat him five to six times a week.

The younger brother, now 11 but aged between seven and eight at the time, told the school his father had cut his fingers by swinging a pole at him the day before.

The father is charged with unlawful wounding and cruelty between September 2003 and February 2005.

The mother is accused of cruelty during the same period. Both deny the charges.

Mr Davis, who has already seen off three Home Secretaries - David Blunkett, Charles Clarke and John Reid, said Gordon Brown had promised to be more open and honest about problems when he became Prime Minister.

"Faced with one of your first tests, why weren't you frank and candid about 5,000 illegal workers licensed to work in sensitive security posts in this country?" he demanded.

"You've admitted you were first told in July but instructed officials that the matter was not ready for public announcement.

"The response of the Home Office so far has been blunder, panic and cover-up."

A LOTTERY scratchcard has been withdrawn from sale by Camelot - because players couldn't understand it.

The Cool Cash game - launched on Monday - was taken out of shops yesterday after some players failed to grasp whether or not they had won.

To qualify for a prize, users had to scratch away a window to reveal a temperature lower than the figure displayed on each card. As the game had a winter theme, the temperature was usually below freezing.

But the concept of comparing negative numbers proved too difficult for some Camelot received dozens of complaints on the first day from players who could not understand how, for example, -5 is higher than -6.

Tina Farrell, from Levenshulme, called Camelot after failing to win with several cards. The 23-year-old, who said she had left school without a maths GCSE, said: "On one of my cards it said I had to find temperatures lower than -8. The numbers I uncovered were -6 and -7 so I thought I had won, and so did the woman in the shop. But when she scanned the card the machine said I hadn't. "I phoned Camelot and they fobbed me off with some story that -6 is higher - not lower - than -8 but I'm not having it.

"I think Camelot are giving people the wrong impression - the card doesn't say to look for a colder or warmer temperature, it says to look for a higher or lower number. Six is a lower number than 8. Imagine how many people have been misled."

A Camelot spokeswoman said the game was withdrawn after reports that some players had not understood the concept.

She said: "The instructions for playing the Cool Cash scratchcard are clear - and are printed on each individual card and in the game procedures available at each retailer. However, because of the potential for player confusion we have decided to withdraw the game."

More than 15m adults in Britain have poor numeracy - the equivalent of a G or below at GCSE maths

Almost three times as many UK adults (15.1m) have poor numeracy - the equivalent of a G or below at GCSE maths - than with poor literacy skills, according to the government's Skills for Life survey.

Peter Hall, of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, said: "The concept of minus numbers is something we would cover with 11 or 12 year olds, and we would expect them to have come across it before.

"The concept of smaller numbers is something that some people do seem to struggle with. Seven is clearly smaller than eight, so they focus on that and don't really see the minus sign. There is also a subtle difference in language between smaller - or lower - and colder. The number zero feels lower.

"There have always been some people who find numbers and basic mathematics difficult. Maybe in the past it was less noticeable because people could find jobs they could excel in without having qualifications in maths."

We really should be putting the judiciary on trial

96-year-old war veteran & Grandfather Mr Shah Chaudhury was peacefully minding his own business riding a tram in south London.

Stephen Gordon, 44 wanted to pass him.

Mr Chaudhury, a British citizen, was standing in the aisle of the tram because nobody would give up their seat for him. He was gripping a rail with both hands to steady himself when Gordon tried to squeeze by under his arms. In the process Gordon’s hat fell off, triggering the attack, a blow to the victim’s head causing serious injury which has resulted in the victim losing sight in one eye.

The only people who had enough balls to do anything? Two school children who were on the tram chased Gordon and later gave evidence against him,

I really hope the other passengers who sat back and let a frail old man stand and then be assaulted are proud of themselves!

Since this assault the poor mans health has deteriorated to such an extent and he now has to reside in a residential care home

and what sentence does this nasty piece of work receive? a three year supervision order.

One of Britain's top black police officers is calling for more people from ethnic minorities to be stopped and searched.

Keith Jarrett, (Black Serving Police Officer) the president of the National Black Police Association, said the measure would help the fight against gun and knife crime.

The group had previously questioned the high proportion of black people who were stopped and searched by police.But Mr Jarrett now wants an increase in the policing strategy in black communities to combat inner city gun and knife crime.

In a speech at the group's annual conference in Bristol this week, he will call on Government and police officials to consider increasing stop-and-searches among black people.He believes this will help reduce the number of shootings that have claimed the lives of another two teenagers in the past week. The association, which represents thousands of officers from ethnic minorities, has previously questioned the high proportion of black people stopped and searched by police.

The Macpherson Report in February 1999 into the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence condemned the use of stop-and-search.The tactic was blamed by many for precipitating the inner city race riots of the 1980s.But Mr Jarrett told The Observer: "From the return that I am getting from a lot of black people, they want to stop these killings, these knife crimes."And if it means their sons and daughters are going to be inconvenienced by being stopped by the police, so be it."

However Milena Buyum (Irritating, Patronising, White Racial Agitator), the co-ordinator of the National Assembly Against Racism, said the tactic disproportionately affected the black community. "It risks alienating black communities further, and is not a very effective way of catching people who are likely to commit offences," she said.

Migration 'causes pressure in UK' but dont mention anyone of colour

Incredibly the United Kingdoms unlected leadership are now begining to admit what we have known for some 40 years imigration causes problems in existing communities.

Almost every UK region has difficulties in housing, health, education and crime because of increased migration, according to an official report.

The findings are contained in a report drawn up to advise ministers on the social impact of immigration.

What we find supprising is this: The Home Office's Migration Impacts Forum is meeting to discuss the effect of eastern European workers. How come when we have had almost unretricted imigration from the Pakistan, India the Indian Sub Continent, Africa, for the last 40 years, it is only the effect of our most recent intake that is causing problems!? try going to Leicester, Birmingham, Southall, Bradford, Brixton to see what effect imigration has had in these areas.

Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said it was important to "strike a new balance" in immigration policy.

However, reports passed back to government suggested ways of minimising problems, including briefing packs on British society and laws, encouraging employers to provide English lessons and basic local council help with integrating into communities.

Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah of the Insitute of Public Policy Research said "it was time for government to move on from anecdotal evidence on the effects of migration" he goes on
"It's not surprising that migration has some social impacts in some circumstances - that's the case with any phenomenon,"

We agree lets do studies of family origin in all the areas above, and see how badley the balance in those communitys has been distorted especialy the actions and effect of large mosques in those communities!

This smacks of the thin end of the wedge to us the goverment is terrified of critsising anyone of colour but more than happy to blame the smallest group of white immigrants in the UK for all the problems!

Obesity 'not individuals' fault'

Individuals can no longer be held responsible for obesity so government must act to stop Britain "sleepwalking" into a crisis, a report has concluded.

No doubt this will vindicate the long held view, of the collosal woman I saw feeding her already overweight offspring TWO big breakfasts (with large Coke) in Mc Donalds on saturday morning.
That her child suffers from a "slow metabolism" rather than an excessive intake of food and a lack of any kind of excersise, and that the drug companies shuld be working harder on a fat pill to help people like her and her child.

I simply cannot belive that our government is issuing such misleading statements,

THE TRUTH:
There are a very small number of people who suffer from genetic defects that make them gain weight, that also then precludes them from losing weight.

However there are a HUGE number of people in the UK who eat too many calories of the wrong type (eg. the Fat's and Sugars ) these are typicaly found in junk food, supermarket pre prepared food, takeaway food (Curry Chinese Pizza), alcohol, soft drinks, Fruit Juices! fried breakfasts, white bread, the list goes on and on they then compound by doing little or no excercise.

All this stupid statement by UK GOV Inc does is reassure those indolent cretins leading this lifestyle they are doing nothing wrong. How fucking stupid can you get.

ROCKSTAR “We have the right” to produce……

Rockstar games are appealing against the British board of Film Classification ban of it’s game Manhunt 2, which features a character who goes on a gruesome killing spree in a mental institution, is the only game to have been banned by British censors in the past 10 years..

The firm, which also produced the smash hit ultra-violent Grand Theft Auto series, says it has every right to make such games - even if some find them unpalatable.

You cannot buy the game here so people are downloading it via the web, yet again we in the UK are being slowly poisoned by the junk culture of the good ole US of A (Unintelligent States full of Assholes)

Someone needs to tell people like Rockstar they DO NOT have a RIGHT to produce this shit…….

To rely upon the "we put parental warnings on these ADULT rated products" defence does NOT wash with me, any kid can find the game and load it! its not hard (lets not forget these games are designed for Americans to use)

I have personaly seen fat illiterate parents asking children which particular version of Grand Theft Auto they want next in GAME stores on more than one occassion. Perhaps the delivey method of these product needs looking at to stop casual access making it a positive action on behalf of the bill payer to allow access to the product? this proof could then be used in cases where underage access to such a product is at issue.

The sooner we wake up to the fact that there are parents out there who should be protected from themselves let alone from free access to this particular kind of "Electronic art"

Carbon Copycats

Now, I'm all in favour of saving the environment, and try not to be too much of a waster myself. In addition to that, I never drive a car into London, so the congestion charge is of little concern to me.

But what is of concern, is the insane decisions made in my name by people I didn't elect. At the moment, everyone is jumping on the Carbon Dioxide Bandwagon (C). And that means that the Congestion Charge (remember: "Congestion" this is the important word) is now being based on CO2 emmsisions! Well excuse me, but I thought this was a congestion charge, not a CO2 charge? Perhaps if they changed the name it waould be easier to swallow, but I really cannot get this bitter pill out of my throat: My residents PARKING permit is priced by CO2 emmissions too. Just think about that for a sec. The price of turning off your car and leaving it at the side of the road is based on what it costs to drive it per kilometer!

I can't think of anything more crazy if I tried, and yet the local council has gone and implemented this without having to run it past anyone. I thought my grandfather died fighting against people like this....

We see in the press today A Roman Catholic airport worker was suspended from work after hanging an image of Jesus on a staffroom wall. Apparently it annoyed a Muslim co Worker to the extent he made a complaint to the management who suspended the worker who put it up.

This just proves our point that religion has no place at work, all places of employment should become completely secular and that includes removing prayer rooms.

In fairness you cannot have one rule for some and not for another now can you.

ASBO for throwing dogs, intimidating the public and trying to cause car accidents!

Charity: Pupils risk prosecution for 'gay' slur

Children who call their classmates “gay” risk being arrested for committing a hate crime even if they do not know what the word means, a leading charity warned last night.

Under new proposals issued by Justice Secretary Jack Straw, it will be illegal to use threatening words or behaviour on the grounds of sexual orientation.

Those convicted would face up to seven years in jail.

But the charity Kidscape warned many youngsters who used “gay” as an insult did not even know what it meant.

Claude Knights, the charity’s training manager, said to many children the word now meant only “the opposite of cool”.

Children say things like, 'Your trainers are gay.’ “It is almost in youth culture now. You get kids in primary school using it and they don’t have any idea what the word means

However, there have already been cases where children have been arrested for using the word “gay” in the playground.

In April four policemen were sent to deal with 11-year-old George Rawlinson from Widnes, Cheshire, after he called one of his schoolfriends “gay”. Two were sent to his primary school and two to his home.

Cheshire police only dropped the matter when the boy explained he meant his friend was “stupid” rather than as a homophobic insult. Schools have also been told to clampdown on use of the word as a playground slur amid fears it legitimises homophobia.

Seems UK kids no longer think "Gay" = Cool

So thats bad news for Scout Masters and Vaseline Inc then.

After all they dont seem to mind how many women in Africa they condem to death from Aids by ordering them not to use condoms! and they have plenty of "sales teams" (missionarys) making sure they replace those who die!! as long as you have converted to the "one true faith" your soul is safe, what happens to you and your dependents whist you are on earth matters little it seems.

A Roman Catholic priest has been jailed for life in Argentina for collaborating with the military junta to torture and murder its enemies.


Christian Von Wernich, 69, was accused of passing on information heard in confessions and being present at several torture sessions during the country's "Dirty War" of 1976-83.

He was convicted of involvement in seven murders, 42 abductions and 31 cases of torture.

Several former prisoners of the junta told the trial that Von Wernich used his office to win their trust, then passed information to police torturers.

They gave evidence that he personally attended several torture sessions, telling police that they were doing "God's work".

Von Wernich claimed he was forced to visit detention centres as part of his duties and that those giving evidence were possessed by the devil.


However, it added: "If any member of the Church ... by recommendation or complicity, endorsed the violent repression, he did so under his own responsibility, straying from and sinning gravely against God, humanity and his own conscience."

Up to 30,000 people were killed or disappeared during the Dirty War, before Argentina returned to civilian rule with the election of Raul Alfonsin as president in October 1983.

Well Well Well The Government is to create a new law which will outlaw inciting hatred against gay people - and homophobic rappers look set to be in the firing line.

Once again they are completely missing the issue that actualy needs addressing

Of course Ben Summerskill, chief executive of gay rights group Stonewall, said: "We're delighted. A new offence will help deter extremists who stir up hatred against lesbian and gay people.

"We refuse to accept any longer that there's no connection between extreme rap lyrics calling for gay people to be attacked or fundamentalist claims that all gay people are paedophiles, and the epidemic of anti-gay violence disfiguring Britain's streets.

Well he would say that wouldnt he thats what he is being paid for, but its this musics impact on the wider majority that interests us.

So lets get this right, the fact that these self same scumbags have been gloryfying violence against women, gun crime and a general view that kicking back and not being part of a mainstream society is NOT seen a good enough reason to ban this type of music!

Sainsbury’s finally show they don’t care about customer service only profit

This is the first of what (we predict) will become a steady stream of reports stating that benefits of employing immigrant workers in preference to the indigenous UK population.

Let’s examine the “flexibility” of the workers discussed in the article below.

1. Many immigrant workers come from countries where working conditions are so draconian they will accept any “terms and conditions” of employment companies like Sainsbury’s offer them without question.
   
   
2. Unsurprisingly most British people will always want a better deal and be less likely to allow themselves to be exploited!
   
   
3. Many immigrant workers are so happy to get a job they do not question the pay rates they are offered.
   
   
4. Interestingly Sainsbury’s said “more could be done to help migrant workers with advice on housing, banking, language and cross-cultural awareness” in other words they want UK tax payers to invest in the bits these people are not that good at!
   

So the fact is “Flexibility” means willingness not to open their mouths in protest or to ask for too much cash!!!

This is the thin end of the wedge Sainsburys are merely the first to start extolling the benefits of cheap imported labour now they have started the ball rolling we shall see the rest follow. This is the begining of the end for rights hard won by British people over hundreds of years, all so our semi monopoly food industry can increase their profts further.

Sainsbury's says 'immigrants better workers'

Immigrant workers have a "superior" work ethic to British employees, according to the supermarket giant Sainsbury's.

The company said it found immigrants to be more flexible and happier with their terms and conditions in employment.

It added that employing migrant workers in its stores often had a positive impact on the domestic staff. Sainsbury's was giving evidence to a House of Lords inquiry into the impact of immigration.


In a written submission, it said that it had greatly increased the number of immigrants it employed over the past two years and would likely continue to do so in future.

It said: "We have found migrant workers to have a very satisfactory work ethic, in many cases superior to domestic workers.

"We believe this results from their differing motivations — they want to learn English, or send money home to their families.

"They tend to be more willing to work flexibly, and be satisfied with their duties, terms and conditions and productivity requirements.

"In the long term, this could have a positive effect on their domestic colleagues. In some areas we have definitely seen a positive shift in culture where migrant workers have been introduced, which has led to a more diverse workforce fostering a more engaged group of workers."

The company, which employs 150,000 people, said it did not specifically recruit migrant workers and looked for the "highest calibre recruit" for any vacancy.

Sainsbury's said hiring migrant workers had forced it to be flexible in its working patterns and language barriers posed potential problems regarding health and safety. It said: "Where we have engaged skilled workers (HGV drivers from Poland, for example) we have had to be creative with their working patterns to allow them to return to their homeland regularly.

"This has encouraged us to consider the use of flexibility among the whole workforce."

It added: "Language barriers are a disadvantage, and migrants' understanding of health and safety requirements are naturally a major concern. Here again we have had to take a very flexible approach by adapting our communications and signage.

"Placing migrant workers among English-speaking colleagues and using fellow workers as interpreters has proven useful."

Sainsbury's said it had not met with trade union resistance to employing migrant workers and said, as the UK population decreased and aged, migrant worker use would likely increase.

The company said more could be done to help migrant workers with advice on housing, banking, language and cross-cultural awareness.

Prof David Blanchflower, who sits on the Bank of England's monetary policy committee, told the peers that immigration had increased "fear of unemployment" in the UK and that increased competition for jobs was likely to "have a downward impact on pay".

The Commission for Racial Equality said it was important to recognise that the economic impact of migrants was wider than often thought. It said: "On the surface, the economic contribution of a low-paid migrant working as a cleaner or security guard, for instance, may seem small, but it is important to recognise that their work may support that of more highly-paid workers."

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research said that 382,000 eastern Europeans had moved to the UK since their countries joined the European Union in 2004.

On Saturday figures from the House of Commons library disclosed that 54 per cent of new jobs in Britain were taken by foreigners between 1997 and 2006.

A survey also revealed that housebuyers believed that immigrants were one of the main causes for high house prices in Britain. More than one in five told propertyfinder.com that the best way to tackle soaring house prices would be to control immigration.

Gordon Brown ruled out a snap general election last night after a fightback by the Conservatives saw support for David Cameron's party surging in marginal constituencies.

Mr Brown set out his reasons for not going to the country, claiming that he wanted to be judged on his "vision" for changing Britain and not his "competence" at dealing with crises.

This bloke is heading for a very short tenancy in no 10 if he thinks we are stupid enough to actualy believe that!

Analysis: Labour has lost control of borders

A two-page report from the Office for National Statistics yesterday illustrated graphically how Labour lost control of immigration.

# Immigration estimates out by 45,000 a year
# Minorities fill 20pc of school places

It had the somewhat bland title "Long-term assumptions for UK population projections". What it showed was that Ministers have grossly underestimated the numbers coming to Britain to settle from abroad.


When Labour came to power in 1997 net immigration was running at around 50,000 a year. This is the difference between those who come to Britain and those that leave. By the turn of the millennium, the immigration assumption was upgraded dramatically to around 130,000.

Then a few years ago, it was increased still further to 145,000. Yesterday’s report puts the assumed annual net immigration figure closer to 200,000 - a four-fold increase in a decade.

It is clear that immigration has been running at or around this figure for five years or so - well ahead of the official assumptions. Figures also show that more British are leaving than ever before and not returning, changing the ethnic complexion of the country.

A second set of figures from the ONS gave an insight into the impact of these levels of recent immigration. One child in five in primary schools in England is now from an ethnic minority. In five town and cities, white British children form a minority of the school roll. This is mainly because immigrants tend to be in their 20s and 30s and have young families.

What the two set of figures show is that the consequences of record immigration were never planned for. How could they have been when the Government’s calculations were out by so much? Until the mid-1990s, the official public policy assumption was that net migration would fall. In the 1991, the projections assumed an increase to 65,000 by 1993-4 and then decline to zero by 2015.

This was in line with the declared Government policy since 1970 to minimise the level of migration for permanent settlement. That policy was jettisoned by Labour without any obvious debate. Arguably, it lost control of what was happening and then sought to make a virtue of its failure.

Local authorities have been telling ministers for years that their population levels are greater than Whitehall claimed. Accurate figures matter to councils because their grants are linked to the number of people. But they say they have been left short-changed and unable to cope with the extra demands on public services.

Schools, GP surgeries, transport services - all are under strain in some parts of the country, especially the South East. If councils have to provide language help as well the costs go up more. Some authorities are unhappy even with the revised figures which they feel underestimate the huge influx from eastern Europe over the past two years.

Westminster City Council said their own research showed that 24,000 migrants were not being counted at any one time, leaving the authority short by £18 million per year. Earlier this week, Sadiq Khan, a government whip and the MP for Tooting, south London, cast doubt on official immigration statistics.

But all this should have been apparent for several years. In 2002, the Migrationwatch think-tank predicted that net immigration would be two million over the next following decade. This was far higher than anything previously forecast and was denounced by the Home Office as "scaremongering".

But the ONS projections show they were absolutely right. They also mean that more than 80 per cent of the population increase of six million between 2003 and 2031 will be due to new immigrants and their descendants.

The Government argues that immigration is good for the economy because it brings in new workers and stimulates growth.

However, while immigrants may add to overall wealth, on a per capita basis the advantage to the country is negligible because they also add to the population. As many studies have shown, the principal beneficiaries are the immigrants themselves.

Councils shamed into welcoming troops home

The Government has bowed to pressure and urged local councils to give troops a proper welcome home.

The move came after an investigation by The Daily Telegraph revealed that despite an appeal from the head of the Army, none of the thousands of soldiers returning this autumn would receive welcome home parades.

Nearly 13,000 troops are set to return from arduous six-month tours in Iraq and Afghanistan between now and November.

Not one local authority out of more than a dozen contacted by The Daily Telegraph was organising an event.

A man who was held in Guantanamo Bay is to launch legal action for damages against MI5 and MI6.

Tarek Dergoul, 29, claims the agencies knew he was being tortured while in US custody, it has been claimed.

Mr Dergoul also accuses British agents of benefiting from intelligence gathered from his alleged mistreatment and wants the court to ban them from using similar tactics in the future.


If the High Court rules in his favour, it could prevent both the security and special intelligence services from interrogating British nationals who are being held and tortured abroad.

Mr Dergoul, who is a British citizen, claims British agents repeatedly questioned him when he was held both at the Cuba camp and in Afghanistan and were therefore complicit in his treatment.

The Guardian says he will be represented in the case by Rabinder Singh QC.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "The Government is aware of Mr Dergoul's accusations."

3. It is apparently illegal in all European member states to sell cheese in anything other than a fully refrigerated sales booth, didn’t seem to bother the local policeman who was stocking up with his from a stall made of two barrels and a plank in France!

In the UK we have allowed Funding Cuts Political Correctness and Human Rights to affect our lives and educational system to the point we are producing a race of peaked cap wearing, leg dragging, slack jawed indolent mouth breathers, who are only capable of communicating in a kind of anglocaribasiat patois, So the chances of them ever being capable of understanding a metric system of measurement is as likely as a politician telling the truth.

The directors of the Environment Agency have come under growing pressure to repay huge bonuses they were awarded days before the worst floods of modern times.

Details of the five-figure payouts were slipped out at the end of last week, on the last day of Parliament. This triggered accusations of a cover-up and exacerbated anger in the worst-hit areas of Britain where 340,000 people still have no running water.

The Labour peer Baroness Young, the agency's chairman, was paid a £24,000 bonus, 15 per cent of her £163,000 salary, the agency's annual report disclosed. Eight more executives, including the director of water management, received bonuses averaging 10 per cent.

On Saturday, in an interview in The Daily Telegraph, Lady Young said water bills would have to rise to pay for additional flood defences.

Last night she defended the agency's record and the payment of performance-related bonuses, saying that the organisation had done what it could in the face of an "extreme weather event".

Missionaries have been urged to scour the virtual world of online computer games in an attempt to convert cyber souls.

The instruction has been made by Father Antonio Spadaro, writing in the Vatican-approved journal La Civiltà Cattolica.

He wants Catholics to go online and take part in the simulation game Second Life in an effort to convert some of its eight million participants.

Second Life players create virtual versions of themselves, known as Avatars, and can buy, sell and interact with other users in a vast computer-generated world accessed by the internet.

Father Spadaro’s concern is that users find themselves free of the constraints of regular life and sin has flourished in the various towns which make up Second Life.

Gambling and prostitution are rife and millions of real dollars exchange hands between players every year.

In some countries, such as Germany, where virtual misdemeanors can constitute crimes, the authorities have already been called in to investigate claims of paedophilia in the online world.

“It is not possible to turn a blind eye to this phenomenon, or offhandedly pass judgement glorifying or condemning it,” said Father Spadaro. “Instead it must be understood...the best way to understand it is to enter it and live inside it to recognise its potential and dangers.”

John Lester, of Second Life producer Linden Lab, said: “I think it’s a cool idea for folks to want to make sure that their side of spirituality is being represented.”.

Second life claims to have more than 8 million "residents" and is home to companies from Adidas and Calvin Klein to BMW and Vodafone.
