Ahmad is accused of running Web sites supporting terrorism and raising funds for Muslim militants in Chechnya and Afghanistan, and with urging Muslims to fight a 'holy war'.

The Muslim Council of Britain called for urgent meetings with the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, and Straw, to ask for clarification on the "disturbing news".

"Today's revelations are simply appalling and raise a whole range of vital issues to do with confidentiality and how to hold to account the improper behaviour of senior police officers," Dr. Muhammad Abdul Bari, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said in a statement.

"This kind of behaviour cannot but do immense damage to the level of trust between Muslim communities and the police."

Five men including the brothers of two of the failed July 21 London bombers were today found guilty of helping them in the aftermath of the attacks.

The group assisted the bombers in evading immediate detection by providing safe houses and passports as well as clothing and food as they hid from the police.

Siraj Ali, 33, from Enfield, north London, Muhedin Ali, 29, from Ladbroke Grove, west London, Ismail Abdurahman, 25, from Lambeth, south London, and Wahbi Mohammed, 25, and Abdul Sherif, 30, both from Stockwell, south London, were between them convicted of 22 charges of failing to disclose information about terrorism and assisting an offender.

Siraj Ali and Wahbi Mohammed were also convicted of having prior knowledge of the plot to explode devices on the London transport network. They were convicted following a four month trial at Kingston Crown Court.

A NEW counter-terror phrasebook has been sent out to police, Whitehall offices and councils telling them how to speak to Muslim communities about extremism without alienating them.

It advises against use of phrases like "jihadi fundamentalist" and "Islamist extremist".

Instead, it suggests that words such as "violent extremism", "criminal murderers" and "thugs" should be used, to avoid any suggestion of an explicit link between Islam and terror.

Two community support officers resorted to locking themselves in a room when confronted by an aggressive 13-year-old, before calling the police to rescue them!

MPs say the incident raises more “concerns” over the effectiveness of PCSOs - dubbed 'plastic police’ - since they were introduced by the Government in 2002

Four men have pleaded guilty to offences linked to a plot to seize a British Muslim Soldier from a Birmingham street and behead him in a nearby garage.

The men then planned to post the beheading on the internet, Leicester Crown Court heard.

Ringleader Parviz Khan, a 37-year-old Briton, pleaded guilty earlier this month to a series of charges including the beheading plot which was thwarted by police and MI5 a year ago.
His plea could not be reported until the start of the trial today of two other men charged alongside the four - including Khan - who pleaded guilty to the plot.

Amjad Mahmood, 32, denies knowing about Khan's plot but failing to disclose the information.

Zahoor Iqbal, 30, denies possessing a document or record likely to be useful to a terrorist, namely a computer disc called Encyclopaedia Jihad.

Both men have also pleaded not guilty to helping Khan to supply equipment to terrorists in Pakistan.

He said: "I do not feel guilty because I did not do it.

Since June 2000, Ken Livingstone has been an outstanding mayor of London. He has stood out in support of a multicultural society and has supported the Muslim communities of the city against racism and Islamophobia as well as all other minorities against all types of prejudice.

His stands and policies have constantly championed justice in the Middle East and around the world, freedom for the Palestinians and withdrawal of occupying troops from Iraq; a rare trait of modern-day public figures.

He has enhanced London's standing in the world and helped improve the lives of all of the city's communities.

For those and many more traits continuously and consistently demonstrated by the Ken Livingstone, we the undersigned believe that it is in the best interest of the Muslim communities of London, and indeed all Londoners, to back Mr Livingstone in this year's mayoral elections.

We pledge to continue our support for the mayor on all levels possible in order to secure his staying in office for a third term.

Two British girls convicted of trying to smuggle cocaine from Ghana to the UK have been jailed for one year each.

Yasemin Vatansever and Yatunde Diya, both 16 and from north London, were arrested at Accra international airport on 2 July 2007.
They denied trying to smuggle 6kg (13lbs) of the drug to London.
It is unlikely they will serve all or part of their sentence in the UK as there is no transfer agreement between the UK and the west African country.
They had told the court they were set up, but the prosecution said they were involved from the start in a plot to smuggle drugs.

John Hogan is on trial in Greece for the premeditated murder of his son Liam, six, and the attempted murder of daughter Mia, then two, who survived when he leapt from the fourth-floor balcony at a holiday resort 18 months ago.

How to reclaim Britain from the thugs

The Sun has asked its readers to give some views on how we can reclaim the streets from thugs, so here is a plan

This problem cannot be fixed over night so a long term plan is required

1. Introduce a licence to have children (its a privilige NOT a right) not bright enough no Kids. On dole no more Kids until you have been working for 24 months minimum. Persistent crimnal offender No Kids or No More Kids (clearly a bad gene pool)
2. Enforce school attendance if children do not attend inform the local CPO, (*let them do the job of the old truant officers as they seem to do nothing much else).
3. If kids keep bunking off MUM & or DAD are prosecuted with possible custodial sentancing, and they then have to take good parenting classes until they can pass an examination (double time for re-offending kids parents)
4. 8pm curfews for kids under 16
5. 10pm Curfews for kids over 16 but under 18
6. Teach in English only and make obedience and manners compulsory after-school lessons 1 day a week.
7. More compulsory after-school sports for all.
8. Make all juvenile & Adult offenders do hard labour 12 hours a day, no play stations, laptops, TV's in cells etc (they will not want to come back inside)
9. Make drug offences a 10 year hard labour minimum (no early release in any circumstance)
10. Bring back compulsory national service (No Exceptions on any grounds releigious or consience people can serve in the medical corps)
11. Council housing should only be provided on short term lets say 6 monthly reviews (you cause problems or let the home fall into disrepair out you go!)
12. Bring back restricted licensing hours.
13. Increase the tax on alcohol
15. Give our Police FULL stop and search powers (Like the old SUS laws)
16. Rescind the Human Rights Act NOW
17. Quit the EU NOW
18. Reinstate corporal punishment in schools and the home NOW
19. For offenders who simply do not respond to our system. We should set up off shore penal colonies like the French "Devils Island" and ship the truly antisocial off there to fend for themselves and good riddance.
20. Set very tight quotas for imigration and start passenger profiling at all ports stations and airports NOW (this should help us in not bringing in more criminals from abroad)
21. VOTE LABOUR OUT forever.


The money is there to fund all this (Circus Labour gave a bank £50 billion of our money unsecured so we know it is there) it just needs the political will.

Brit mosques 'worse than Iraq'

THE Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq has claimed mosques in Blackburn are more extreme than in his own country.
Dr Barham Salih’s comments have sparked outrage among British Muslim leaders.
Shadow culture minister Tobias Ellwood revealed the comments Dr Salih had made to him at a dinner party in Baghdad.
The Tory MP claimed the Iraqi said: “I am not surprised that you British are facing so many problems with extremists after what I saw in those mosques in Blackburn.
"What I saw would not be allowed here in Iraq - it would be illegal.”

Mr Ellwood made the claims in the House of Commons during debate about terrorism.
He said: “My eyebrows raise when you have a very senior Iraqi leader make comments like that.

“I do not believe these comments can be dismissed out of hand. I was absolutely shocked. He went inside the mosques, and said literature he saw would be illegal. He was quite clear.
“The comments are only directed at a very small proportion of mosques in the UK - the vast majority of Muslims wouldn’t want to be labelled.”

Dr Salih visited Blackburn, Lancs., as a guest of the town’s MP Jack Straw in 2005.
Salim Mulla, chairman of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, said Dr Salih was positive about what he had seen in the town when they spoke during his visit.
He said: “We are going out of our way to bring the community together. Nobody is working harder than us at breaking down barriers.
“For Dr Salih to make these sort of comments is not very helpful at all.
“I don’t know where he’s coming from. He was very co-operative when he visited, and took lots of photographs.

“How many incidents have we had in Blackburn? He is talking a load of rubbish.”

'We want to offer sharia law to Britain'

Dr Suhaib Hasan who is a spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain on issues of sharia law, says there is great misunderstanding of the issue in the West.

"Whenever people associate the word 'sharia' with Muslims, they think it is flogging and stoning to death and cutting off the hand," he says with a smile.

He makes the distinction between the aspects of law that sharia covers: worship, penal law, and personal law. Muslim leaders in Britain are interested only in integrating personal law, he says.

This man is a fool, firstly "Integrating" is clearly the last thing on the minds of anyone demanding sharia law to the UK.

The UK has and has had it's own justice system for hundreds of years and will continue to do so for many hundreds of years to come, so we do not need (or want) sharia law in the UK.

This is clearly the first steps to setting up a seperate system of justice for those in the UK that have no intention of ever becoming fully integrated UK citizens, it is only for those who want to like a life style that is only compatible with an islamic state and the last time I looked the UK was not an Islamic state.

Our answer to these devisive morons is INTEGRATE if you cannot do that then GO AWAY and live in a country that does give you what you claim to want.

PARIS (Reuters) - The head of France's opposition Socialist party rejected on Sunday the idea that former Prime Minister Tony Blair could become the first president of the European Union.
In a speech on Saturday to France's ruling centre-right UMP party, Blair set out his vision for Europe, fuelling speculation he may seek to become the 27-nation bloc's first president, a post due to be created later this year.
But Francois Hollande said the former Labour prime minister's support for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq made him unsuitable for the post.
"We need a president who could be representative of a political Europe, a Europe independent from the United States and I don't think Tony Blair fits that profile," Hollande told France's Radio J in an interview.
"(Blair) has evident qualities and had successes in his country but the position he took on the invasion of Iraq means he can't be the next president of Europe," Hollande added.
In his speech, Blair irked France's Socialists by joking that his views would probably make him at home in French President Nicolas Sarkozy's government, though he would rather be a member of a reformed Socialist party.

A teenage girl whose body was found on a riverbank five months after she vanished was "beaten and robbed" by her parents, an inquest has heard.
The decomposed body of Shafilea Ahmed, 17, of Liverpool Road, Warrington, was found on a Cumbrian riverbank in 2004.
The inquest was told Shafilea was unhappy about her parents' plans for an arranged marriage for her in Pakistan.
Homelessness officer Anne-Marie Woods, from whom Shafilea sought advice, said she feared she would never return home.

"My parents are going to send me to Pakistan and I'll be married to someone and left there.

"My mother had started to pack and my parents had been in to school to inform them we were going to Pakistan."

'Genuinely frightened'

Ms Woods said: "She came across as a shy, quiet girl.
"She came across as being genuinely frightened of this impending arranged marriage."
Ms Wood said the teenager turned down accommodation in a Liverpool refuge because she did not want to disrupt her education in Warrington where she was hoping to become a lawyer.

She said the teenager was given emergency accommodation in a hotel and told a flat would be available on 10 February 2003, but chose to go back home.
Ms Woods added: "She had returned to her parents after they had agreed not to take her to Pakistan."

'Not credible'

Police arrested her parents on suspicion of kidnap alongside five other relatives from Bradford after her teachers reported her missing in 2003.
But all were later released from bail.
As the opening of the hearing Shafilea's father said he was "surprised" when she went missing.

Pathologist Dr Alison Armour also revealed it was "not credible" that Shafilea died of natural causes.
The medical expert believed the teenager been strangled or smothered to death.
Despite a five-year murder investigation by police nobody has ever been convicted over Shafilea's death.

ACCRA (Reuters) - A court in Ghana on Wednesday delayed for a second time the sentencing of two British teenagers found guilty of smuggling 6 kg (13 lbs) of cocaine to allow a social services report to be taken into consideration.

Yasemin Vatansever and Yatunde Diya were arrested on July 2 at Accra airport when Ghanaian anti-drugs officers said they found cocaine worth 300,000 pounds ($620,000) in laptop bags they were carrying as they boarded a flight to Britain.

The two, both 16, were found guilty by a juvenile court in the former British colony last November. They are now due to be sentenced on January 23.

Sentencing had originally been due in early December but was delayed until Wednesday so the court could consider a social services report from London on the girls.

"We got word from the Ghana social welfare department that they have not finished studying the report," British High Commission spokesman Gary Nicholls told reporters.

"Since they are expected to add their comments before submitting it to the court, the judge has agreed to give them a further two weeks," he said, adding the judge would not allow any further delay beyond January 23.

The teenagers, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, have said they were tricked into carrying the bags by male acquaintances in Ghana and Britain, and did not know their content.

The two were arrested under Operation Westbridge, a project set up by Britain and Ghana to tackle drug smugglers using Accra airport as a gateway to Britain and Europe.

LONDON (Reuters) - The parents of missing girl Madeleine McCann have denied media reports that they are planning to turn the story of their daughter's disappearance into a film.

"We can categorically deny that we are considering a movie about Madeleine's disappearance. This is simply untrue," her father Gerry wrote on his blog.

The youngster disappeared last May shortly before her fourth birthday during a family holiday in the Portuguese beach resort of Praia da Luz.

Her parents, whom Portuguese police have named as formal suspects, believe she was abducted from their holiday apartment as they had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.

Despite a string of possible sightings and a huge police investigation, the girl's whereabouts remains a mystery.

On Wednesday, most tabloids reported on their front pages that the McCanns were hoping a film might help their search and raise money to pay for a team of private detectives they have hired.

The reports said the 1.2 million pounds raised by public donations to search for the missing girl has almost been exhausted and that the parents' spokesman Clarence Mitchell had confirmed meeting film representatives.

"Some of the media coverage today has been at its worst since Kate and I were declared arguidos (official suspects)," Gerry McCann said in a blog entry dated on Tuesday.

"As stated today by Clarence, there was a preliminary discussion between a production agency and a representative of Kate and I to discuss the possibility of a documentary about the issues we have faced since Madeleine was abducted."

He said the couple had been approached by "a huge number of media outlets regarding a myriad of projects" but they only agreed to a tiny proportion.

"Each proposal is considered on whether it is likely to have a positive effect, either directly or indirectly on the search for Madeleine," he said

A film could be made about Madeleine McCann's disappearance after talks with a major entertainment company.

Her parents are considering giving permission for IMG to make a movie or documentary.

Their spokesman confirmed to Sky News Online that a meeting with the firm took place last month.

But he said Gerry and Kate McCann did not attend and stressed nothing has yet been agreed.

Clarence Mitchell said a film would only be considered if the McCanns believed it would help raise awareness of the case or help fund the private search for Madeleine.

IMG, the firm behind the award-winning drama-documentary Touching The Void, made the initial approach, it is thought.

The resulting meeting in mid-December discussed the possibility of making the story of four-year-old Madeleine into either a film or a TV drama.

Mr and Mrs McCann were aware of the meeting but did not attend in person.

Instead, Mr Mitchell and another representative of the McCanns met IMG at the firm's London offices.

The spokesman said: "We have only had one discussion with IMG. It may or may not happen.

"If we feel any particular proposal in the media has validity in helping us find Madeleine, we are happy to discuss it."

Mr Mitchell said it was just one of many approaches that have been made by media companies over the missing girl, who vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal in May.

In a statement, Darlow Smithson Productions, a production company owned by IMG, said: "Darlow Smithson had a preliminary meeting with representatives of the McCanns about the possibility of an observational documentary following the ongoing search for Madeleine.

"Discussions are still at a very early stage and the issue of money has never been raised."

Instead of selling its digital catalogue through the customary sales channels, Sony intends to launch a gift card service called Platinum MusicPass, through which customers will buy a digital album card in shops and download the full-length albums from a website after they type in an identifying number on the card.

The Top Gear host revealed his account numbers after rubbishing the furore over the loss of 25 million people's personal details on two computer discs.

He wanted to prove the story was a fuss about nothing.

But Clarkson admitted he was "wrong" after he discovered a reader had used the details to create a £500 direct debit to the charity Diabetes UK.

"I opened my bank statement this morning to find out that someone has set up a direct debit which automatically takes £500 from my account," he said.

"The bank cannot find out who did this because of the Data Protection Act and they cannot stop it from happening again.

"I was wrong and I have been punished for my mistake."

Police were called in to search for the two discs, which contained the entire database of child benefit claimants and apparently got lost in the post in October 2007.

They were posted from HM Revenue and Customs offices in Tyne and Wear, but never turned up at their destination - the National Audit Office.

The loss, which led to an apology from Prime Minister Gordon Brown, created fears of identity fraud.

Clarkson now says of the case: "Contrary to what I said at the time, we must go after the idiots who lost the discs and stick cocktail sticks in their eyes until they beg for mercy."

Muslims call for 'no-go' CoE bishop to resign

Muslim groups have demanded the resignation of the Bishop of Rochester after he claimed that Islamic radicals had turned parts of Britain into "no-go" areas for non-Muslims.


The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali wrote in The Sunday Telegraph that fundamentalism had made some communities hostile to Christians and those from other faiths.

But Mohammed Shafiq, from the Ramadhan Foundation, said: "Mr Nazir-Ali is promoting hatred towards Muslims and should resign."

Ajmal Masroor, of the Islamic Society of Great Britain, said: "It's a distortion of reality. Our communities are far more integrated than they were 10 years ago.

"If the Church of England had an iota of fairness they would take serious action."

But senior figures from the Church of England have backed the Bishop of Rochester's remarks about faith and said Christians in predominantly Muslim areas could feel isolated and nervous about how to express their belief.

The Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Rev John Goddard, said his colleague had raised serious questions about the role of faith, race and culture in British society.

The Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev Nicholas Reade, said it was becoming difficult for Christians to share their faith in areas where there was a high proportion of other faiths.

William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, said: "I don't think that view is factually correct. I'm not sure where these no-go areas are, I don't recognise that description."

But Bishop Goddard said that Christians, who are outnumbered in many parts of Blackburn, were frightened that their ideas could be misinterpreted by other faiths and seen as a form of oppression.

"It is not fear that there is going to be retaliation but it is a fear that you get it badly wrong and cause hurt to others of integrity of other faith you did not intend," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"When you engage in proclaiming the Christian faith in an area dominated by another religion, I and others tread very carefully so that the message is heard and not seen as some sort of oppression."

Bishop Goddard said Christians in northern towns such as Blackburn and Burnley, where 95 per cent of the Asian population is Muslim, could find life difficult.

"I think they sometimes feel as though they are strangers," he said. "It is a question of how people of different beliefs work together. Of course, the vast majority of Muslims are peace loving."

Endorsing Bishop Nazir-Ali's comments, he said: "Bishop Michael has raised these issues as a start of a debate which has serious connotations.

"The seriousness is how do you enable people of different cultures, races and faiths to live together as one nation, that seems to be at the back of what he is saying."

Bishop Goddard said the increased wearing of the hijab in parts of Britain was a cultural rather than religious phenomenon.

He added: "So many tensions are driven by culture rather than faith. My hope is that we can work effectively across the boundaries of other people then faith can be used as a means to understand each other."

LONDON (Reuters) - Islamic extremism has turned some areas of Britain into hostile "no-go areas" for non-Muslims, a Church of England bishop said on Sunday.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the Bishop of Rochester, the Right Reverend Dr Michael Nazir-Ali said non-Muslims find it hard to live or work in these separate communities.

Muslim leaders and politicians dismissed the bishop's comments as scaremongering and said there was no evidence to support his views.

The Pakistan-born cleric compared the hostility found in these "no-go areas" to the intimidation associated with some supporters of far-right political parties.

"There has been a worldwide resurgence of the ideology of Islamic extremism," the bishop wrote. "One of the results of this has been to further alienate the young from the nation in which they were growing up and also to turn already separate communities into "no-go" areas where adherence to this ideology has become a mark of acceptability.

"Those of a different faith or race may find it difficult to live or work there because of hostility to them.

"In many ways, this is but the other side of the coin to far-Right intimidation."

He added: "Attempts have been made to impose an 'Islamic' character on certain areas, for example, by insisting on artificial amplification for the Adhan, the call to prayer."

The bishop warned that a "multi-faith mish-mash" without "moral or spiritual vision" was eroding Christianity.

There has been a wide-ranging debate over integration and radicalisation among Britain's 1.8 million Muslims since four UK Muslims killed 52 people in suicide attacks in London in 2005.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has spoken of the need to integrate communities better and isolate extremists from the moderate majority of Muslims.

A spokesman for his Downing Street office had no comment on the bishop's remarks.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said Nazir-Ali was "talking nonsense" and had no evidence to support his views.

"This is irresponsible scaremongering," an MCB spokesman said. "Where are these so-called areas that he's talking about?"

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Muslim groups on Wednesday accused a senior politician in Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party of stirring up hostility against foreigners in a bid to win a regional election.

Roland Koch of the Christian Democrats (CDU) has focused his campaign for re-election as premier of the prosperous western state of Hesse on crime, in particular offences by foreigners.

He reacted to an assault on a German pensioner by two youths -- one Greek, one Turkish -- in a Munich railway station by saying Germany had too many young foreign criminals and urging an end to "multicultural" coddling of immigrants.

The assailants shouted "Shit German" at the man before kicking him in the head. The brutal attack, caught on a surveillance camera and played repeatedly on German television in recent days, prompted calls for tougher sentencing, boot camps and even the deportation of criminals of foreign origins.

"The debate is shameful and scandalous," head of the TGD Turkish Communities in Germany Kenan Kolat told Reuters on Wednesday, saying the deportation issue was "political arson".

"This is pure populism," he said, urging Merkel to speak out against it.

Germany is home to about 15 million people with an immigrant background -- about 18 percent of the population -- and Merkel has talked often about the need to integrate the country's 3.2 million Muslims, most of whom are of Turkish origin.

But she says immigrants must accept German culture and won rapturous applause at a conference of her mostly Roman Catholic party last month for saying mosques should not dwarf churches.

On Wednesday, Koch unveiled a programme to crack down on youth crime, which included plans to change the law to make it easier to deport young criminals.

"He needs to grab attention and is playing the foreigner card but it's damaging as he is reinforcing negative cliches," said Aiman Mazyek, of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany.

Ali Kizilkaya, head of the Muslim group Islamrat, (appropriate name that) called Koch irresponsible.

"You might be able to win elections with these slogans but it will damage the image of Germany," he told Reuters, saying he would like to have seen more criticism of Koch from other CDU members, many of whom have backed him, and from the media.

Social Democrat (SPD) Andrea Ypsilanti, Koch's opponent in the January 27 vote in Hesse, accused him of resorting to panic measures and waging a campaign based on fear.

Most polls indicate Koch will lose his absolute majority but that he will be able to hold onto power by forming a coalition with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP).

Critics have accused Koch of using "anti-foreigner" tactics before. In 1999, he won the Hesse vote with a petition against plans to give citizenship to half the country's foreigners.

Women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers, a new study has shown. So be afraid: Women or gay men could be behind the wheel of any car!!!!

Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men.

Psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists.

Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information.

The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses.

The results back earlier studies supporting the stereotype that women are poor navigators. It also explains why gay men navigate their cocks into places they should not go.

Britain was ill-prepared for the floods which caused devastation across Britain this summer and urgent action is required to improve defences and early-warning systems, according to a Commons report.
Sir Michael Pitt, chairman of today's interim report, said the floods which damaged thousands of homes and caused billions of pounds worth of damage were a "wake-up call" for the country.

How insulting, people have been warning central govt, against allowing developers to build on flood plain and the lack of flood defences, despite hundreds of requests from local authorites for additional funding to combat potential fooding they were all ignored, Hence we get a bland report instead of what we should have had a condemnation of Circus Labour's criminal incompetence.

X Factor fans complain over phone-in votes

Fans of Welsh baritone Rhydian Roberts claim he was robbed of the X Factor crown last night because the talent show's voting lines were constantly engaged.

The ITV1 programme's message board and Rhydian Roberts fansites have today been inundated with complaints from fans claiming they could not get through to register their vote.

Scottish vocalist Leon Jackson was the surprise winner in the finale, upsetting Roberts – the bookmakers' favourite - and sibling duo Same Difference to take the title.

An X Factor spokesperson today denied there were problems with the show's voting system, although she said some viewers may have had problems with their phone service providers.

But in a year in which broadcasters have been dogged by phone-in scandals, fans immediately suspected foul play.

Two Teenagers Stabbed To Death

Two teenagers have died after being stabbed in separate knife attacks which took place on the same day.

The first incident took place outside the station in Dewsbury, west Yorkshire. Two people have been arrested.

The victim, who lived near the scene of the stabbing, was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition and died later from his injuries.

Officers were called to the station on Saturday afternoon after receiving reports a youth had been seriously assaulted.

They arrested another teenager, also 17, at the scene.

Police later detained a 24-year-old in the area, and he is also being questioned.

Later, in north London, a mass brawl ended with one 16-year-old being fatally stabbed and another seriously injured.

Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the murder and disturbance in Stoke Newington.

Residents described a loud and raucous party which began in the early evening.

By 11pm nearly a hundred people, most in their teens and early 20s, had congregated in and outside the hall.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a teenage youth was taken to the Royal London Hospital suffering from a stab wound.

Police believe they know the identity of the victim and next of kin are being informed.

Chief constables across the country are refusing to pass on a Christmas message from the Home Secretary to their officers for fear it will damage morale.

Jacqui Smith's refusal to backdate a recommended 2.5 per cent pay increase has caused anger among officers.

Cumbria's chief constable, Craig Mackey, did not pass on the festive greeting because he said it could "negatively damage morale". He added that "there was unanimous support not to pass the message on and I will write to the Home Secretary explaining this".

Another chief constable said that many of his colleagues were also refusing to pass on the message.

In her private letter, Ms Smith praised the "hard work, commitment and sacrifices" of the 140,000 officers.

The country's 43 forces have joined with the Police Federation in taking the Home Secretary to court over her decision not to backdate the pay rise. The Home Office declined to comment.

Police minister Tony McNulty has told Sky News that the Government will not back down in the row over police pay.

It comes as officers threaten strike action over the Home Secretary's decision not to back date a 2.5% pay award agreed by independent arbitration.

By law, police are not allowed to strike and Mr McNulty said that would not be changing any time soon.

He said: "I am not getting into hypotheticals, they can't strike by law and I don't think that is a position that will change unduly."

The Government reportedly capped police pay because it needed more money to fight terrorism.

A top advisor to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said they risked not getting £50m for counter-terrorism if they asked the Treasury for more cash for officers' wages, according to a secret memo.

It says police are paid enough already, and dismissed police chiefs' demands for the right to strike.

But Mr McNulty denied the Government capped police pay to pay for the fight terror, saying: "No it is not the case."

Officers were awarded 2.5% by an independent arbitration panel but ministers decided to delay its implementation, reducing the increase to 1.9%.
