Muslims call for 'no-go' CoE bishop to resign

Muslim groups have demanded the resignation of the Bishop of Rochester after he claimed that Islamic radicals had turned parts of Britain into "no-go" areas for non-Muslims.


The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali wrote in The Sunday Telegraph that fundamentalism had made some communities hostile to Christians and those from other faiths.

But Mohammed Shafiq, from the Ramadhan Foundation, said: "Mr Nazir-Ali is promoting hatred towards Muslims and should resign."

Ajmal Masroor, of the Islamic Society of Great Britain, said: "It's a distortion of reality. Our communities are far more integrated than they were 10 years ago.

"If the Church of England had an iota of fairness they would take serious action."

But senior figures from the Church of England have backed the Bishop of Rochester's remarks about faith and said Christians in predominantly Muslim areas could feel isolated and nervous about how to express their belief.

The Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Rev John Goddard, said his colleague had raised serious questions about the role of faith, race and culture in British society.

The Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev Nicholas Reade, said it was becoming difficult for Christians to share their faith in areas where there was a high proportion of other faiths.

William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, said: "I don't think that view is factually correct. I'm not sure where these no-go areas are, I don't recognise that description."

But Bishop Goddard said that Christians, who are outnumbered in many parts of Blackburn, were frightened that their ideas could be misinterpreted by other faiths and seen as a form of oppression.

"It is not fear that there is going to be retaliation but it is a fear that you get it badly wrong and cause hurt to others of integrity of other faith you did not intend," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"When you engage in proclaiming the Christian faith in an area dominated by another religion, I and others tread very carefully so that the message is heard and not seen as some sort of oppression."

Bishop Goddard said Christians in northern towns such as Blackburn and Burnley, where 95 per cent of the Asian population is Muslim, could find life difficult.

"I think they sometimes feel as though they are strangers," he said. "It is a question of how people of different beliefs work together. Of course, the vast majority of Muslims are peace loving."

Endorsing Bishop Nazir-Ali's comments, he said: "Bishop Michael has raised these issues as a start of a debate which has serious connotations.

"The seriousness is how do you enable people of different cultures, races and faiths to live together as one nation, that seems to be at the back of what he is saying."

Bishop Goddard said the increased wearing of the hijab in parts of Britain was a cultural rather than religious phenomenon.

He added: "So many tensions are driven by culture rather than faith. My hope is that we can work effectively across the boundaries of other people then faith can be used as a means to understand each other."

LONDON (Reuters) - Islamic extremism has turned some areas of Britain into hostile "no-go areas" for non-Muslims, a Church of England bishop said on Sunday.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the Bishop of Rochester, the Right Reverend Dr Michael Nazir-Ali said non-Muslims find it hard to live or work in these separate communities.

Muslim leaders and politicians dismissed the bishop's comments as scaremongering and said there was no evidence to support his views.

The Pakistan-born cleric compared the hostility found in these "no-go areas" to the intimidation associated with some supporters of far-right political parties.

"There has been a worldwide resurgence of the ideology of Islamic extremism," the bishop wrote. "One of the results of this has been to further alienate the young from the nation in which they were growing up and also to turn already separate communities into "no-go" areas where adherence to this ideology has become a mark of acceptability.

"Those of a different faith or race may find it difficult to live or work there because of hostility to them.

"In many ways, this is but the other side of the coin to far-Right intimidation."

He added: "Attempts have been made to impose an 'Islamic' character on certain areas, for example, by insisting on artificial amplification for the Adhan, the call to prayer."

The bishop warned that a "multi-faith mish-mash" without "moral or spiritual vision" was eroding Christianity.

There has been a wide-ranging debate over integration and radicalisation among Britain's 1.8 million Muslims since four UK Muslims killed 52 people in suicide attacks in London in 2005.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has spoken of the need to integrate communities better and isolate extremists from the moderate majority of Muslims.

A spokesman for his Downing Street office had no comment on the bishop's remarks.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said Nazir-Ali was "talking nonsense" and had no evidence to support his views.

"This is irresponsible scaremongering," an MCB spokesman said. "Where are these so-called areas that he's talking about?"

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Muslim groups on Wednesday accused a senior politician in Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party of stirring up hostility against foreigners in a bid to win a regional election.

Roland Koch of the Christian Democrats (CDU) has focused his campaign for re-election as premier of the prosperous western state of Hesse on crime, in particular offences by foreigners.

He reacted to an assault on a German pensioner by two youths -- one Greek, one Turkish -- in a Munich railway station by saying Germany had too many young foreign criminals and urging an end to "multicultural" coddling of immigrants.

The assailants shouted "Shit German" at the man before kicking him in the head. The brutal attack, caught on a surveillance camera and played repeatedly on German television in recent days, prompted calls for tougher sentencing, boot camps and even the deportation of criminals of foreign origins.

"The debate is shameful and scandalous," head of the TGD Turkish Communities in Germany Kenan Kolat told Reuters on Wednesday, saying the deportation issue was "political arson".

"This is pure populism," he said, urging Merkel to speak out against it.

Germany is home to about 15 million people with an immigrant background -- about 18 percent of the population -- and Merkel has talked often about the need to integrate the country's 3.2 million Muslims, most of whom are of Turkish origin.

But she says immigrants must accept German culture and won rapturous applause at a conference of her mostly Roman Catholic party last month for saying mosques should not dwarf churches.

On Wednesday, Koch unveiled a programme to crack down on youth crime, which included plans to change the law to make it easier to deport young criminals.

"He needs to grab attention and is playing the foreigner card but it's damaging as he is reinforcing negative cliches," said Aiman Mazyek, of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany.

Ali Kizilkaya, head of the Muslim group Islamrat, (appropriate name that) called Koch irresponsible.

"You might be able to win elections with these slogans but it will damage the image of Germany," he told Reuters, saying he would like to have seen more criticism of Koch from other CDU members, many of whom have backed him, and from the media.

Social Democrat (SPD) Andrea Ypsilanti, Koch's opponent in the January 27 vote in Hesse, accused him of resorting to panic measures and waging a campaign based on fear.

Most polls indicate Koch will lose his absolute majority but that he will be able to hold onto power by forming a coalition with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP).

Critics have accused Koch of using "anti-foreigner" tactics before. In 1999, he won the Hesse vote with a petition against plans to give citizenship to half the country's foreigners.

Women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers, a new study has shown. So be afraid: Women or gay men could be behind the wheel of any car!!!!

Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men.

Psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists.

Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information.

The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses.

The results back earlier studies supporting the stereotype that women are poor navigators. It also explains why gay men navigate their cocks into places they should not go.

X Factor fans complain over phone-in votes

Fans of Welsh baritone Rhydian Roberts claim he was robbed of the X Factor crown last night because the talent show's voting lines were constantly engaged.

The ITV1 programme's message board and Rhydian Roberts fansites have today been inundated with complaints from fans claiming they could not get through to register their vote.

Scottish vocalist Leon Jackson was the surprise winner in the finale, upsetting Roberts – the bookmakers' favourite - and sibling duo Same Difference to take the title.

An X Factor spokesperson today denied there were problems with the show's voting system, although she said some viewers may have had problems with their phone service providers.

But in a year in which broadcasters have been dogged by phone-in scandals, fans immediately suspected foul play.

Two Teenagers Stabbed To Death

Two teenagers have died after being stabbed in separate knife attacks which took place on the same day.

The first incident took place outside the station in Dewsbury, west Yorkshire. Two people have been arrested.

The victim, who lived near the scene of the stabbing, was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition and died later from his injuries.

Officers were called to the station on Saturday afternoon after receiving reports a youth had been seriously assaulted.

They arrested another teenager, also 17, at the scene.

Police later detained a 24-year-old in the area, and he is also being questioned.

Later, in north London, a mass brawl ended with one 16-year-old being fatally stabbed and another seriously injured.

Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the murder and disturbance in Stoke Newington.

Residents described a loud and raucous party which began in the early evening.

By 11pm nearly a hundred people, most in their teens and early 20s, had congregated in and outside the hall.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a teenage youth was taken to the Royal London Hospital suffering from a stab wound.

Police believe they know the identity of the victim and next of kin are being informed.

Chief constables across the country are refusing to pass on a Christmas message from the Home Secretary to their officers for fear it will damage morale.

Jacqui Smith's refusal to backdate a recommended 2.5 per cent pay increase has caused anger among officers.

Cumbria's chief constable, Craig Mackey, did not pass on the festive greeting because he said it could "negatively damage morale". He added that "there was unanimous support not to pass the message on and I will write to the Home Secretary explaining this".

Another chief constable said that many of his colleagues were also refusing to pass on the message.

In her private letter, Ms Smith praised the "hard work, commitment and sacrifices" of the 140,000 officers.

The country's 43 forces have joined with the Police Federation in taking the Home Secretary to court over her decision not to backdate the pay rise. The Home Office declined to comment.

Police minister Tony McNulty has told Sky News that the Government will not back down in the row over police pay.

It comes as officers threaten strike action over the Home Secretary's decision not to back date a 2.5% pay award agreed by independent arbitration.

By law, police are not allowed to strike and Mr McNulty said that would not be changing any time soon.

He said: "I am not getting into hypotheticals, they can't strike by law and I don't think that is a position that will change unduly."

The Government reportedly capped police pay because it needed more money to fight terrorism.

A top advisor to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said they risked not getting £50m for counter-terrorism if they asked the Treasury for more cash for officers' wages, according to a secret memo.

It says police are paid enough already, and dismissed police chiefs' demands for the right to strike.

But Mr McNulty denied the Government capped police pay to pay for the fight terror, saying: "No it is not the case."

Officers were awarded 2.5% by an independent arbitration panel but ministers decided to delay its implementation, reducing the increase to 1.9%.

The UK also has a £12 million p.a. bilateral programme with non-governmental organisations in Darfur which provides water, sanitation and health care to over four million people, of which 2.2 million are internally displaced in camps.

The UK has pledged £5 million to the Darfur Community Peace and Stability Fund launched by the UN and international partners to promote peace and reconciliation at the community level and contributed £73 million to the African Union Mission in Sudan to help support the protection of civilians in Darfur. The UK stands ready to implement a major recovery programme, pending the cessation of hostilities.

AN INTERNAL REPORT unearthed by the Mail on Sunday claims to show that Virgin Media has incorrect records on at least 1.5 million telephone subscribers. This could potentially cause problems if they dial 999 – the UK's emergency number.

Data on around 300,000 subscribers isn't just potentially wrong, it is missing entirely. Virgin Media has admitted that there is a problem and reckons it should be able to fix it by next year.

Unfortunately for the company, Ofcom –the UK telecoms watchdog - has become involved and has told the newspaper that "it would launch an urgent investigation because this would appear to involve a threat to the life and limb of Virgin customers."

Any operator's 999 database needs to be accurate in case a person calls the emergency services but is unable to provide their own address – for example, by feinting.

The problem seems to seem from the fact that Virgin Media's customerbase is drawn from two previously separate cable companies – NTL and Telewest.

The INQ would hazard a guess that the new company had problems migrating data from two systems to create a new 999 database.

Virgin Media denied being "irresponsible" in not revealing the issue earlier either to customers or to Ofcom.

Brown's "contempt" for the Armed Forces

Gordon Brown was today forced to defend himself against damaging accusations from ex-service chiefs that his Government had "contempt" for the Armed Forces by saying he had "nothing but praise" for them.
The Prime Minister interrupted a visit a school in Uganda to say that rather than starving the services of cash he had increased budgets.


He was clearly angry that the ex-service chiefs used a House of Lords debate on Thursday night while he was travelling to Africa to attack him personally.

He said: "I have got nothing but praise for the Armed Forces.

"Every year of this Government we have been increasing budgets on defence and that's why a defence settlement this year gives almost a billion every year so we can fund defence properly.


Oh really Gordon, then how come our forces are poorly equipped, they do not have enough spares for helicopters, and they have run out of missiles for the helicopter gunships? Your words sound like yet more BOLLOCKS to us!!

The huge influx of foreign players to the Premier League has ruined the England football team, according to a Sky News survey of clubs.

According to Sky

More than half of those questioned cited the Premier League's foreign legion as the major cause for England getting dumped out of the European Championships.

Nice attempt at finding the answers, but of course not correct, England’s football worries are to be found in more than just one area.

1. The FA board, THEY alone select and employ the England chief coach, a task they been proven to be woefully inept at.
   Looking at them yesterday I was struck with the thought they looked very much like the leaders of the Chinese communist party a row of old men to whom, the obedience of their charges is of far greater importance than their success.
   They are also guilty of NOT investing or taking a real interest in grass roots football in England.
   
   
   
2. The British press, have set themselves up as both judge and jury on all things Football, this is fine when they focus on matters football, but they have widened the scope to personal matters to such an extent, that I feel sure Frank Lampard’s granny is careful what she says at the bingo!
   In addition they over hype the team in any competition to the point where they give the fan’s unrealistic ambitions & expectations. All of which combines to make the position of England manager unattractive to anyone other than a true patriot or lunatic.
   
   
   
   
3. The Squad themselves, the players are the only 22 people on the field of play that can affect any result, it seems complacency is the order of the day in “Squad UK” at present. A culture of earning and keeping your national squad place should be fostered and developed.
   A recent piece by the female football correspondent of the Daily Telegraph criticising the commitment of the England squad a day before the disastrous result against Croatia, brought forth howls of indignation from a certain Manchester United defender,
   Who was daft enough to “forget” to take a drug test (That is the level of commitment he gives his job!) they must look inwards and decide why they choose to represent their country with the performances they give.
   
   
   
4. Foreign Club Managers, are employed to provide their club owners with financial and league success (Quite rightly)and they do not care a jot if England win anything
   NOT to provide our national squad with quality resource for free, they of course want heir boys selcted as this raises their value in the transfer market but they don’t want them playing at their full potential as they may get hurt a point they make strongly to the England head coach! Dont blame them now, we fans want our clubs to be sucesssful, money has changed Football forever and the national squad demands burns clubs money, it does NOT create it for them.
   
   
   
5. Foreign Club owners, do not want their stars injured on England duty and do not care a jot if England win anything or not. The football business needs to take a long hard look at its self, it makes its money being our national game yet it has mismanaged its collective finances to such an extent it deperatly needed these peoples money in many cases just to survive, yet the clubs & fans it seems, are quick to point the finger at"foreigners" ruining the demestic game.
   
   
   
6. Foreign Players, they only affect England in as much as their presence in the Premiership means we have less English players to draw our national squad from, this in turn secures the positions of the current crop, but why do managers and chairmen want them anyway? Money! They are cheaper than our wonderful, if forgetful home grown talent.
   
   

Glib Cowards

Defence Secretary Des Browne has hit back at criticism by former defence chiefs, saying morale among serving soldiers is "as high as it could be".

Admiral Lord Boyce said Gordon Brown treated UK forces with "contempt" - and his decision to make Mr Browne Scottish Secretary as well was an "insult".

Mr Browne said he had not heard those criticisms from serving soldiers and he was happy to be judged on his record.

The arrogance of this tosser is beyond belief, his glib answer (highlighted above) is hiding behind the wall of protection these people give themselves by only ever speaking to officers who can see what critisising a political leader will do to their own careers in the future!!

Basket Case

It came to me last night like a bolt of lightning. A crystal clear vision of the here and now. After a day of government incompetence being reported in the news, and after my longest ever commute home through the worlds most terrible traffic, and the freezing rain running down my back, it was all perfectly clear. And then we had the most embarrassing international football performance I can remember.

So, it’s clear this country is fucked.

The government’s fucked
The weather is fucked
The traffic is fucked
The nation’s sporting ambitions are fucked

I’d leave the place tomorrow if the airport wasn’t fucked too.

Ruthless McClaren set to axe Beckham

This will be the same "Ruthless McClaren" that axed Beckham, then reinstated him, then said " Big Games need Big Game Players" and went on to sing David's Praises as a "Big Game Player" and then sidelines him, then selects a keeper with little or no International "Big Game Experience" and we wonder why we are playing catch up to qualify.

As Steve McClaren rightly says "qualification is all about 12 games" but surely you dont have to make it this hard for ourselves?

Personaly I am pleased to see SR Phillips play I love his speed and passion (we need him at the Hammers)

I think "Ruthless McClaren" may well pay the ultimate price for his decisions and become "Jobless McClaren" sooner rather than later
